August 27th, 2010

I stumbled upon this print ad and had to share. “Lasinen Lapsuus” is Finnish for “Glass Childhood“.  This print ad campaign, designed and created by Euro RSCG Helsinki is for the purpose of educating the public. The Fragile Childhood activity has begun in 1986 and has been established as a well-known form of activity in Finland. Its goal is to help children who suffer from parental alcohol misuse. As quoted by someone who was effected by the project: I.. || Continue Reading →

Peter Bjorn & John Poster

I love “gig posters” (concert posters) almost as much as movie posters.  Therefore when I came across young designer Logan Alexander’s poster design for a local gig for Peter Bjorn & John, I instantly fell in love with it. The reverse orientation, the low saturated color palette, the TONS of negative space and the modern use of typeface is fabulous.  Logan is a college student in St. Louis and it looks like this guy has a great career ahead of him as a.. || Continue Reading →

Troy DeShano’s The Breakfast Club Poster

August 11th, 2010

If you grew up in the 1980’s, one of the most pinnacle movies that helped shape a generation was The Breakfast Club.  And the pioneer behind it and many other great movies of the 80’s was John Hughes.  After his death, many communities held their own tribute film festivals that paid homage to the film great. Creative designer and illustrator Troy DeShano designed a series of minimalistic posters that helped promote one of these film festivals celebrating the life.. || Continue Reading →

Artist James Hopkins: Shelf Art

July 28th, 2010

Mixed media fine artist James Hopkins has a unique gift. He can take what seem like ordinary objects and arrange them on a shelf in such a manner as to convince the eye that it is looking into the eyes of death… or more specifically a subtle image of a skull. Below are a series of images from his Vanitas series.  For more of this inspiring contemporary artist, view the rest of his work here. “Black Still Life” “Consumption” “Design For Life” “Last.. || Continue Reading →

Jennifer Maestre’s Colored Pencil Sculptures

Massachusetts-based artist Jennifer Maestre has a use for colored pencils other than drawing with them.  She uses 100’s of 1 inch sections of colored pencils to create her three-dimensional works of art.  Inspired by sea urchins, her creations are very unique in nature and I love coming across fine artists that fine a new use for a common item and allow us to see it in a new and unique way.  You can view her other works at her website: www.jennifermaestre.com

“RED” Movie Poster

July 15th, 2010

The good ole’ designers over at BLT & Associates have done a great job of designing the series of striking movie posters for the new Bruce Willis movie “Red“, based on the DC Comic of the same name. The stark black and gorgeous red and orange hues really draw your eye, but it is the strong horizontal bars with type that contrast beautifully with the title treatments vertical orientation.  Great execution of combining the title and a character image. Whether.. || Continue Reading →

What is Design? Poster

July 5th, 2010

I love to see how all typographical solutions come together.  I came across this contest submission by Boston graphic designer Scott Nicolson and loved it’s simplicity. Sure, it would have been easy to fill the whole page, have the different statements be in different fonts, sizes, and angles, but I think it would have ended up a mess. Instead, Scott leads the viewer down a logic path of reading and I love the connectivity of the pieces.  The muted hues are gorgeous and.. || Continue Reading →

The Ultimate Cheese Burger

The Ultimate Cheese Burger

I came across an amazing Flash-based website that pays tribute to the quest for the ultimate cheese burger.  Cheese & Burger is a website that does nothing but dish up 30, yes THIRTY, different recipes for cheese burgers.  We are talking using a variety of beef, a tons of different types of cheeses, different types of buns, and condiments to boot.  This site has some great and quirky voice-overs, a terrific interactive flip-type booklet format and is just plan fun to engage.. || Continue Reading →

Karl Herbert: Pattern Bizcards

June 13th, 2010

Time to give a shout out to another graphic designer out there. In this case, my kudos go to Austin, TX-based designer, Karl Hebert. I first stumbled upon his work when I came across the business cards for Pattern Productions, an Austin-based television production company.  He created this while being on staff with Spoonbend. What was nice about this logo and identity project was that the client had zero pre-conceived ideas for their logo.  They just liked the name “Pattern”. .. || Continue Reading →

From the creative imagination of I Love Dust, a design firm from the UK, comes a fantastic bottle label design for a UK-based cider company, Hearts Cider Makers. I love the complexity, yet simple muted hues being used. Very non-traditional and inventive.  Great job!
