Chalk Stylist: Dana Tanamachi

I love sharing with the world when, though I am never the first and probably not the last, I stumble upon creative genius or uber-talent that is floating around.

My latest find was in the realm of chalkboards.  We have all been around them.  We were raised in school around them (at least my generation or older was) and we may have even had our share of eraser pounding outside of classrooms.

Nowadays we see them in small coffee shops and elusive deli’s here and there.  But they are usually the written flare of the employee on that shift and sometimes they can be quite nice.  But exquisite?… well, that may not be the case.  Until you see the jaw-dropping typographical and hand-lettered stylings of Brooklyn-creative Dana Tanamachi.

With no aid of a stencil, overhead projector, or little fairies, Dana is able to craft out some really beautiful work… whether it is on a deli-board, or a living-room wall (that has been painted using chalkboard paint).  Her work is a marvel to look at.

But it is also a wonder to watch her in action.  To see how her letterforms come into being… the dab of a damp towel, the swipe of the chalk.  The fluid motion of her arm…  Wanna see?  Check out this time-elapse video of her in action.

Than gaze below at a sample of her work.  Inspiring, Dana… inspiring.
