Wolverine Comic Covers – Homage to Dali, Van Gogh and Gorey
December 27th, 2009
While I will admit to not being a as devoted a comic book fan as much of the population out there, I do appreciate comic covers for their overall artistic design and illustrative might.
That’s why I had to show a few of the covers that made Complex.com’s Best Comic Book Covers of 2009 list. The covers in my highlight are all of Marvel’s own Wolverine. What I found exceptional about them were that all 3 of these featured were illustrated in a style that paid homage to various artists.
1. Salvador Dali

This particular cover (shown above) was from The Amazing Spiderman #592 and pays tribute to a particular Dali painting (shown below). Where once there were melting and bending clocks are now the familiar Wolverine blades.
2. Vincent Van Gogh
This cover is a great homage to Van Gogh’s painting style and reminescent of his self-portrait and the tale of his supposed self-mutilating act of cutting off his own ear. It was shown for Wolverine’s 35th Anniversary and featured in Uncanny X-men #508 and crafted by comic artist Laura Martin.
3. Edward Gorey
This cover was illustrated by comic artist Skottie Young and featured the unique illustrative style of Edward Gorey and was created for Captain Britain and MI-13 #12.
